Anatomy of a Career Center

This post could also be known as “The Many Employer-friendly Spaces Under our Roof.”

Those who’ve visited our blog before may have picked up in previous posts that there are people at the Career Center who are here solely to work with employers. Though, for today’s post I wanted to discuss the spaces in our center dedicated to employers. Some of these areas are here only for employer use, while others have double-duty and help both recruiters and students. Here’s a visual (take note of the blue shady areas!):

Let me offer some details on the less-obvious ones…

  • Interview Rooms: Can be reserved (for free) by employers hiring for full-time jobs or  internships
  • Library: Can be reserved by employers looking to host “drop-in” hours (much like a professor’s office hours).
  • Training Room: Can be reserved (for a charge) for employers looking to host info sessions and networking events. Employers who volunteer to host workshops will also find themselves using this space.

Hopefully offering this as a visual really shows just how much of our center is available for you. The good news? Anytime an employer is coming to recruit on campus and to use one of these areas, we will help get the word out about your visit.

Behind the Scenes at a Career Fair

Have you ever been to a career fair?  Thinking about attending next time?  Here’s a peek at what they look like, start to finish…

(event styling by our very own Event Coordinator, Kat)

Before employers and students arrive, staff is working on set-up…

with attention to detail, of course.

(I was serious about the details.)

As you (the employer) arrives, the hosting Career Center will probably be very happy to see you…

…and will welcome you with open arms

While you set-up, our staff will take the event seriously…

(actually, students will too)…

but with all the balloons around, we might try to mix in some fun, too. Cue the dancing.

Side note: if your company is one of our corporate sponsors, we’ll try to give you some extra shout-outs to show you how much we appreciate your support.

Once the doors open, hundreds and hundreds of our awesome students will enter the room.

And it will look a little like this…

and this…

and this…for about five intense but exciting hours.

When it’s all over, we will look like this...

and this...

and lastly, this. I like to call this one 'naptime in a dark office.'

Now that I’ve got my nametag on…

Greetings from UCI!  Let me personally welcome you to the newest blog to come out of the Career Center.  You’re probably busy, so I will waste no time in telling you what you will find here.

Who: I’m Dena B. Ogden! In my professional life, I do Employer & Community Outreach for the Career Center at the University of California, Irvine. I have a background in higher education and recruiting, and I joined the Career Center in February of 2011. I am also currently pursing my MA in Organizational Leadership. In my personal life, I’m a Gen Y wife with a pet rabbit and passion for pop culture and current events.  And in both lives, you’ll find me referencing that I’m a native Washingtonian with a coffee habit who is still occasionally surprised by OC culture.

What: Live from Orange County promises regular entries about diving into the local business scene, tales of networking and navigating through corporate culture, and posts about what employers should know about students and recent graduates.  I will be interspersing updates about college recruitment and employment trends on a local and national level, as well as updates about Gen Y and professionalism since those are areas of particular interest.  I may or may not include personal anecdotes from time to time (or often. We’ll see how it goes!)

When: Only when I have something interesting to say, I promise

Where: all over Southern California, but mostly Orange County (Irvine, to be specific). Occasionally I will be traveling to conferences and visiting out-of-town employers, so I also reserve the right to write on location. Though  for the record, my office is based here, on the UCI campus:

Why: It quickly became apparent after only a few months in my new role that I’ll be gathering valuable information about the Orange County business scene, how to network, and also learning more about what the greater OC community thinks about the fabulous students of UCI. My goal with this blog is to blend all of these areas into one, insightful, informative and (fingers-crossed) entertaining place that our employers, community members, and students can enjoy. It’s a venti order, but I’m confident that I can deliver – I will be asking you guys, my readers, to help keep me accountable.

Thanks for stopping by, and looking forward to meeting many of you in the field!
