Nice to meet you, please look at my pictures.

Friends and readers, I think it’s time I share some of my wedding pictures with you. Well, sort of.

See, we welcomed a new team of student employees to the Career Center a few weeks ago. From what I’ve seen so far, they are a rad bunch, and we wanted to ensure they got properly introduced to the professional staff. One of the ways we made this happen was by sharing collages. Yes, collages…as in, the glue-y messes we made in elementary school. But trust me, after this exercise, collages are one of my new favorite communication platforms (right after text messages, and owls).

Employers, I present to you my own collage, and the suggestion that those charged with getting to know lots of people (or ensuring that lots of people get to know one another) use a similar tool. Nothing is more awkward than being asked to “introduce yourself to the group” without having anything prepared. This way, we all had something to talk about, and we were each in control of the topics we shared. Perhaps this could work for a new class group of interns or new hires?

Yes, the bottom image is of a lop-earred rabbit standing on his hind legs printed on powder blue paper. It's a long story.

On that note, I wish you all a happy weekend!

6 months, by the numbers!

Hi all!

For those who were in the UCI Career Center yesterday, you may have seen Michelle and I in our matching tiaras. This week officially marks our 6-month anniversary on campus, a mini-milestone of which we are slightly proud. It’s also given me a few reasons to reflect and come up with….drumroll, please…a list of numbers!  Here is what the first 6 months as a brand-new Employer & Community Outreach Specialist can look like:

  • 1340 sent emails
  • a bunch more received…many have been re-sorted and/or deleted so a grand total is not available. We’ll just go with “a bunch”
  • 23 networking events
  • 41 employer meetings
  • 9 days of conferences/travel/off-sites
  • 279 Tweets
  • 24 blog posts
  •  Plus, many hours dedicated to training, research (on both the employment community and UC Irvine), meetings, and getting up to speed on best practices

I’m not what numbers in other jobs look like, but I see this list and feel okay – I think they represent a good start, but more room to grow (side note: these numbers should be fairly exact, but I reserve the right to claim a margin for human error).

Michelle is away from her desk currently, so I wasn’t able to grab her for a pose. But, here is proof of the existence of our “6 mos.” tiaras...

...Not to be confused with “lo mos” tiaras, which is what one colleague thought they said. Though, BabelFish tells me that lo mos is Spanish for “the mos”. I never knew the mos was a word, and dictionary.com tells me that “mo” is short for moments. So, in a way, our Tiaras said “The Moments.” I am okay with that.

48 hour trip to the Hoosier state – CHECK!

What time is it again??

So, I haven’t ventured further East than Texas in a surprisingly large number of years…who knew a 3-hour time difference could be so jarring? (Arriving at the hotel at 2:00am didn’t really help, either!)  Exhaustion aside, my trip to Interactive Intelligence earlier this week went well.

I think the majority of what I learned is most applicable to my fellow UCI Career Center colleagues and our students, so I’ll save the company profile for them.  That said, to summarize this trip, I’d say: Good people, cool company, long hours, impressive facility, lots of information, yummy snacks, and access to iced coffee both mornings…I was a happy camper. I took a couple of snapshots to prove that I did in fact travel this week…I wish more of them turned out, but either way, here you go!

My plane out of California. It was the oldest plane I have been on in recent years...after that flight, I'll always look at individual air vents as a luxury!

My attempt at an action shot: Arriving at Interactive Intelligence HQ1.

Snazzy lobby space that makes me want to paint my office.

You know it’s going to be a good visit when your shirt matches the wall.

Sunset during my layover in Phoenix, a gorgeous way to one of the quickest trips ever!

In other news, I’ll be in the office for three whole days next week, so I’m looking forward to sharing more updates soon!

-tap-tap- is this thing on?

Man, oh, man! Have the last few weeks been full of adventures, excitement and pirates! Okay, maybe not pirates, but there has been a LOT going on. For starters, it occurred to me that I probably could have let you guys know that I was going to be on vacation for most of last week. Oops. Hindsight is 20/20, next time I’ll give a heads-up that live.from.oc will actually be quiet.in.oc. But, the good news is: I am currently in the office!

Here is the last few week and a half, by the number

    • 1…holiday
    • 2…vacation days
    • 1…trip to San Diego for employer visits
    • 2…visits with Heather, my counterpart from UC Riverside
    • 2…networking events
    • 20…minutes I spent playing with our IPad video recorder yesterday
    • 1…video journal created
    Until next time!

Now that I’ve got my nametag on…

Greetings from UCI!  Let me personally welcome you to the newest blog to come out of the Career Center.  You’re probably busy, so I will waste no time in telling you what you will find here.

Who: I’m Dena B. Ogden! In my professional life, I do Employer & Community Outreach for the Career Center at the University of California, Irvine. I have a background in higher education and recruiting, and I joined the Career Center in February of 2011. I am also currently pursing my MA in Organizational Leadership. In my personal life, I’m a Gen Y wife with a pet rabbit and passion for pop culture and current events.  And in both lives, you’ll find me referencing that I’m a native Washingtonian with a coffee habit who is still occasionally surprised by OC culture.

What: Live from Orange County promises regular entries about diving into the local business scene, tales of networking and navigating through corporate culture, and posts about what employers should know about students and recent graduates.  I will be interspersing updates about college recruitment and employment trends on a local and national level, as well as updates about Gen Y and professionalism since those are areas of particular interest.  I may or may not include personal anecdotes from time to time (or often. We’ll see how it goes!)

When: Only when I have something interesting to say, I promise

Where: all over Southern California, but mostly Orange County (Irvine, to be specific). Occasionally I will be traveling to conferences and visiting out-of-town employers, so I also reserve the right to write on location. Though  for the record, my office is based here, on the UCI campus:

Why: It quickly became apparent after only a few months in my new role that I’ll be gathering valuable information about the Orange County business scene, how to network, and also learning more about what the greater OC community thinks about the fabulous students of UCI. My goal with this blog is to blend all of these areas into one, insightful, informative and (fingers-crossed) entertaining place that our employers, community members, and students can enjoy. It’s a venti order, but I’m confident that I can deliver – I will be asking you guys, my readers, to help keep me accountable.

Thanks for stopping by, and looking forward to meeting many of you in the field!
